The Thermok features a RS-232 serial port. This port can be used for connecting the Thermok to a computer and logging temperatures. It operates at a fixed 9600 baud, 8N1.
Data FormatThe data format is a simple ASCII format which can easily be parsed. A sample string is:
The four columns are separated by a space and indicate the temperature in degrees C for each of the four channels. The sentence is terminated by a carriage return (\r) and a line feed (\n), not always in that order. WirelessThere are various devices that can be used to convert RS-232 serial to wireless Ethernet. One device which we have used is called the Serialan and it is sold by datahunter.com for about $190. The Serialan has two serial ports so it could be used to monitor two Thermoks simultaneously. It is housed in a stout sheet metal case. In the right environment the Serialan has a few hundred foot range.
Other serial to wireless Ethernet devices exist and a quick google.com search should yield many other prospects. Supply power through the serial portIt is possible to power the Thermok through pin 9 on the serial port DB-9. There is a blocking diode on this pin to allow power in to the Thermok but not out from the Thermok. The voltage drop across this diode is 0.7 volts so you must supply greater than 7.7 volts DC on this input. |
